Opening and chat about the theme for tonight

A Leap Year is when the calendar year is extended to have 366 days - adding February 29th to the year. This is done to put the calendar year into line with the length of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, so that the seasons always occur during the same months each year.

The calendar year is 365 days long, unless the year is exactly divisible by 4, in which case an extra day is added to February to make the year 366 days long.

If the year is the last year of a century, eg. 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, then it is only a leap year if it is exactly divisible by 400. Therefore, 1900 wasn't a leap year but 2000 was.

Talk about leaping animals
Have some pictures or a toy of an animal that leaps ie. frog, kangaroo.

Poem: The Frog by Hilaire Belloc

Be kind and tender to the Frog,
And do not call him names,
As "Slimy skin," or "Polly-wog,"
Or likewise "Ugly James,"
Or "Gap-a-grin," or "Toad-gone-wrong,"
Or "Bill Bandy-knees":
The Frog is justly sensitive
To epithets like these.

No animal will more repay
A treatment kind and fair;
At least so lonely people say
Who keep a frog (and, by the way,
They are extremely rare).
