CRAFT IDEAS

Friendship Mobile

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO

1.       Ask the Beaver Scouts to think about and name different elements of nature, such as sun, moon, stars, wind, rain, snow, fog, rainbows, water (including oceans, lakes, and rivers). Then ask them to talk about how these different elements can be considered friends. You might volunteer a suggestion, such as - the rain is my friend because it helps me sleep at night.

2.       Then have children draw and cut out shapes representing their friends in nature (or cut pictures from magazines, mount them on construction paper). When children have cut out three or four shapes, they can punch a hole near the top of each one and attach them to a hanger, using different lengths of yarn.

3.       Next, have the Beaver Scouts copy sentences from the chart that describe the friends on their mobile.

4.       They can mount this page on a piece of construction paper and draw a picture of themselves on the back. Then they can attach it to the mobile as well.

Friendship Gallery

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO

1.       Chat to the Beaver Scouts about the kinds of activities that friends do together. Here are a few to get children started: a team sport, eating lunch together, playing a board game, sharing a secret.

2.       Have them work in pairs to create friendship portraits. One child in each pair lies on a panel of paper, and the other traces his or her outline. Then partners switch positions and repeat the process so that each child has an outline.

3.       Children begin by labelling their portraits with their names. Then they fill the outlines with scenes of activities they especially enjoy doing with friends. Children can draw right on the paper or make small drawings and attach them to the outline.

Cardboard Roll Puppets

Materials Needed:

Instructions:
Very Simple!

1.      Decorate the cardboard rolls to make different people or animals

2.      You can even cut them to different heights.

3.      Use the misc. craft supplies to make hair, clothes, mouths, etc.

Be creative!

4.      Glue the lolly sticks inside the bottom edge of the cardboard roll for handle.

Friendship Necklace

These necklaces are a great way to use up bits of fabric craft materials left from other projects! We made these for our 'bring-a-friend' night. The Beaver Scouts  made them at the beginning of the evening, and had to exchange them with three other people over the course of the night. Everyone ends up with a necklace and a neat reminder/welcome to Beaver Scouts

Materials: (for one necklace)

Directions:

1.       Tie wool ends together in simple double knot.

2.       Spread a thin layer of white glue on roughly half of one side of the felt - this will be the side that holds decorations.

3.       Place your centrepiece wherever you like in the glue

4.       Go wild with the seed beads, ribbon scraps, etc... ! (The Beaver Scouts don't keep the one they made, so encourage them to be generous decorators!)

5.       Lay flat and let dry a bit.

6.       Meanwhile, take the ribbon length and place one of the large beads at the end. Tie a knot around the bead or in some other fashion so it doesn't come off. Thread the other 3 pony beads onto the ribbon.

7.       Play a game and let the glue dry for 10 minutes.

8.       Take the felt piece and fold it in half over the 'bottom' of the wool loop. Glue the ribbon length at the bottom of the felt piece, and the two ends of the felt piece shut. (Attaching it around the wool loop.)

9.       Let it dry again for a bit. Beaver Scouts may have to hold it shut for a minute while the glue gets tacky. For the impatient, try staples.

10.   Beaver Scouts can either wear their necklaces throughout the evening, or just during a "friendship game/song" at the end of the meeting.

This craft can be speeded up by pre-cutting felt, wool, and ribbon lengths, and pre-tying the loops of wool. Depending on how well your Beaver Scouts  'share', it may be faster to give each one a small pile of 'decorations' rather then have them pick through a selection on their own - someone is bound to be left out of the sequins, etc.

Friendship Pins

Materials:

Directions:

1.      Cut card board into desired shape using cooking cutters as template.

2.      Trace design on back side of denim fabric.

3.      Glue denim to cardboard, add pin to back.

4.      Beaver Scouts can then decorate with fabric paint.

Friendly Poetry

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO

1.       Ask the Beaver Scouts to chat about characteristics that make a good friend. Then explain that these characteristics will be used to create a poem. You may want to write the following sample poem on the board to get them started:

                            Good Friends

                           A good friend

                           Plays with you,

                           Laughs with you,

                           Shares with you,

                           Talks with you,

                           Listens to you,

                           And NEVER,

                           NEVER,

                           NEVER,

                           Tells your secrets

                           To anyone.

2.       Have the Beaver Scouts create their poem using some of the characteristics from the chat. Encourage children to illustrate their poems.

GAMES

Really any game in pairs!

Beaver under a blanket

At command or whistle, Beaver Scouts crouch down and leader covers one Beaver with blanket. The rest of the Colony has to guess who is underneath.
