Chat about the Chinese New Year

Tonight our theme is the Chinese New Year. This is not like our new year which happens on the same date each year - this one can happen between late January to mid February. This year it is the 22nd of January. Every new year is named after one of 12 animals each taking it in turn. 2004 is the year of the monkey.

Craft: A red parcel with a leaping fish on the front

Let the Beaver Scouts cut out an envelope shape in red card and draw a leaping fish from gold coloured paper. They should stick the envelope together and place the fish on the front. Give each Beaver Scouts a few gold chocolate coins to place in the envelope and then seal.

End  + Prayer

Jesus, tonight we have thought about the people of China and their new year. We ask for them all - what they ask for themselves - as is written on the strips of red paper which are stuck on doors all over the house. Peaceful days throughout the years, happiness as wide as the East Sea and springs of good luck forever We also ask these things for ourselves.
