Red
Rose 2004 – Beaver and Cub day
Also
a great Birthday party
We were lucky enough to be able to go and have a fun filled and muddy day. We were made very welcome by all the staff and scouts on camp. At lunch time the staff also ran games for the Beaver Scouts – one had the biggest pass the parcel you have ever seen!
The camp was divides into 4 sub camps with activities in each of them:
Decorate
the Mad Hatter’s Tea Pot
The Scouts had made a large tea pot out of chicken wire covered in paper-mache
The Beaver Scouts had to decorate the tea pot – there were some inventive pictures!
Perhaps a simpler thing for the colony would be to make tea pot shaped cards – similar to the one on this link - but using an Alice in Wonderland theme
Cress
Eggs
The Beaver scouts added cress seeds to an egg shell filled with damp cotton wool.
The leaders explained how it would grow
In your colony you could put the egg shell onto of a tube of card which the Beaver Scouts could decorate as one of the Queen of Hearts soldiers.
Humpty
Dumpty Jigsaw
The Beaver Scouts made up large floor jigsaws that some enterprising person has made from hardboard and painted.
In the colony the Beaver Scouts could design the jigsaw on cardboard and leaders could cut them up into large pieces then have a relay game to see who could be the 1st to put their picture back together.
Croquet
Using children’s croquet sets – this is quite hard for the Beaver Scouts to do – it challenges them quite a bit.
Find
the White Rabbit
In the chapel at Waddecar – we got the opportunity to show it to the Beaver Scouts and explain all about it. Then they hunted for hidden white rabbits – pictures not the real thing!!
There were about 30 hidden around the chapel area – you could easily do this in your colony.
Eye Patches
Made from patches of black felt and elastic. You could always use black card instead and the Beaver Scouts could paint a skull and cross bones onto it in white paint or white wax crayon.
Wooden
Book marks
These were really good – I think you can get them from Baker Ross (www.bakerross.co.uk) or S&S Services (www.ss-services.co.uk). They were made from wooden spatulas with an animal shape glued to one end. The Beaver Scouts decorated them as they wanted. You could always do this in the colony using thick card.
Connect
4
Bit like the ones you see in play areas. May not be possible in the colony – although you could always have a games night.
Shields
Each Beaver Scouts got to make a large shield made from pre-cut cardboard. They decorated it them selves. The hand grips were mage from card attached to the shield using paper fasteners.
Get
knighted
The Beaver Scouts were knighted as Knights of the Round Table and could choose their own name.
Jester’s
skills
A
leader showed the Beaver Scouts loads of Jester skills and tricks – they could
all have a turn. The Diablo was really difficult to do!
Indian Headdress
The Beaver Scouts made these from a strip of card with a coloured feather. In stead of taping the card to the correct head size it was cut – like this – saves tape!!
Try
out bow and arrows
Don’t panic – not real ones – they were made from string and garden canes. The Beaver Scouts had to try to burst water filled balloons – they loved it!
Make
a Tee-Pee
Made from paper and decorated with Indian symbols. A good one to do in the colony. Cut a semi circle of paper. Let the Beaver Scouts decorate and then tape into a one shape. Add a piece of feathered paper to the top.
Look here for Cree Indian signs www.omniglot.com/writing/cree.htm or here www.inquiry.net/outdoor/native/skills/picture_writing.htm
Bit wet – but fun. The Beaver Scouts each had a Frisbee and had to scoop it into the water then drain off the water and see if they had found gold. The leaders said there was some in there but we did not find any!! Perhaps a bit wet for a colony evening – you could try it outdoor with lots of towels!
Face
painting
Simple but fun – just watch out for allergies
At the end – all the songs they like.
Each Beaver Scouts got a goodie bag of sweets, cake and a badge.
